ANATOLIAN HATAYIS ACCORDING TO CÖNKS AND MAJMUAS: NEW POEMS AND THE PSEUDONYM PROBLEM

Abstract

This study examines the works of poets who used the pseudonym “Hatayî” in the Anatolian context and the problem of pseudonym confusion surrounding this name, based on cönks and majmuas. While this pseudonym is predominantly associated with the Safavid ruler Shah Ismail Hatayi in literary history, it is well-known that various folk poets in the religious-mystical atmosphere of Anatolia also adopted it. This situation leads to significant attribution problems regarding the authorship of poems found in manuscripts. Within the scope of the research, ten cönks and majmuas collected from various archives—primarily the Doğan Kaya Archive—and libraries were meticulously analyzed. Utilizing qualitative research methods such as document analysis and text comparison, the identified poems with the Hatayî pseudonym were compared with existing literature (Ibrahim Aslanoğlu, Bekir Karadeniz, Atalay, etc.). As a result of the analysis, a total of 38 new poems—20 belonging to Can Hatayî, 15 to Sultan Hatayî, 2 to Kul Hatayî, and 1 to Pir Hatayî—that have not been included in any previous publications were uncovered. The findings support the existence of approximately ten different poets conceptualized as “Anatolian Hatayis” and shed light on the problem of pseudonym inflation. The study concludes that an approach centered solely on Shah Ismail is insufficient for evaluating texts with the Hatayî pseudonym; instead, the unique identities of these poets must be assessed independently in light of data from cönk records. This article is significant both for introducing new texts to the literature and for addressing the problem of attribution through concrete data.
