Abstract

This study examines how grotesque and rhizomatic concepts manifest in contemporary visual art within a posthumanist aesthetic framework. Posthumanism moves beyond anthropocentric thinking by approaching the relationships between humans, technology, and nature from a pluralistic and fluid perspective. Concepts such as bodilessness, animacy, symbiosis, and endosymbiosis are discussed to illustrate how artists represent hybrid and interspecies forms of life. Grotesque aesthetics, tracing its historical roots to contemporary art practices, provides transgressive, ironic, carnivalesque, and transformative visuality. BioArt, performative, and cybernetic works exemplify the posthumanist reinterpretation of the grotesque; artists such as Thomas Feuerstein, Oron Catts, Ionat Zurr, Fan Xiaoyan, and Monster Chetwynd produce hybrid and fluid corporeal or techno-organic forms that decenter human authority, integrating ethical, aesthetic, and experimental dimensions. This study highlights the posthumanist and grotesque potential in contemporary art, emphasizing its aesthetic, ethical, and cultural implications.
