THE TABLE AS A CONTEMPORARY ART OBJECT: A READING OF ALLAN WEXLER’S WORKS

Abstract

This article explores the concept of table in contemporary art as a space of communication, cultural signifier and social dynamics. The article explains the historical development of food and table, followed by the works of Allan Wexler.  The table carries multi-layered meanings such as status, belonging, confrontation, sharing, and separation. In the article, firstly, the prominent examples of the table in art history starting from the Ancient Period are given, and then its place in contemporary art is evaluated through the works of Allan Wexler. In this research, which aims to contribute to the studies conducted in this field, the literature review method was used.
