Abstract

In today’s art, writing and language have become important topics that are questioned. This article aims to examine the artistic understanding of Xu Bing, who has gained fame in the field of Contemporary Chinese Art, through his writing and calligraphy-based artistic productions called “Book from the Sky”, “Square Word Calligraphy”, and “Square Word Calligraphy Classroom”. It is thought that the examination of these works of the artist, who has an important place in the integration of Eastern codes into productions in today’s contemporary art, is important in terms of revealing the artistic readings between the past and the present. For this purpose, the article closely examines Xu Bing, the importance of writing in Chinese art, and three of his works in which writing is transformed and questioned. In the article, where the qualitative research method is used, books, articles, theses and internet sources are used.
