Abstract

Although there are various approaches to the birth of art, we can say that it is mostly shaped by its relationship with religion. Of course, the dynamics arising from the differences of societies and other social institutions also shape art, but it would be appropriate to say that religion is more of a determining power in terms of directing life in particular and in general. Until the Renaissance, religion (in Christianity) embodies itself with art as a means of authority, and its influence on societies begins to decrease in the process that continues with the Enlightenment and later with modernism. Because, in addition to ideas such as humanism, rationality, and secularism experienced in this process, innovations such as discoveries, urbanization and industrialization are of a kind that will radically change the society. As a result of these changes, the meaning of art has changed with the efforts of artists to reject the traditional and take modern steps. The period after 1960, called postmodernism, is not like the eras that existed before it, because race, identity, gender, politics, belief, etc., in a turbulent way. New discourses have developed over the subjects. This period, in which individualization is at the forefront, brings globalization with it. Therefore, as a process in which new meanings are produced, it also found its counterpart in art and led to new approaches. Therefore, the discourses and practices of contemporary art are quite different from the understanding of art before it. The narratives of this process are now minor narratives; The subjective discourses of the artists shape the art. Religion, which is one of the most important subjects they mentioned, has taken its place as a subject in art with concepts such as sublimity or vilification by making use of the questioning practices of contemporary art.
