Abstract

Textile structures the form of clothing by creating an aesthetic, visual and conceptual language with the boundaries of the body. Clothing form has been one of the means by which artists and designers in art and fashion can express themselves aesthetically, conceptually and culturally throughout history. Clothing forms, which have been put forward within the framework of various artistic trends from the 1960s to the present, emphasize the position that textiles and thus clothing have acquired in contemporary art. Clothing forms, which are presented in isolation from the body, represent the departure of clothing from its traditional role and the emergence of its conceptual dimension. Art movements and social developments seen after the second half of the 20th century brought about the transformation of textile into an art object and the formal change of this art. In this context, the representation of textile, which is an artistic expression tool with its plastic possibilities, through the form of clothing, expresses the transition to three-dimensional forms in contemporary textile/fiber art. Since the 1960s, textile and fiber artists have produced conceptual works in the field of clothing art, fiber art and wearable art. The study aims to examine the approaches in which clothing is perceived and interpreted in a new way as form and concept, in parallel with the changes in contemporary art disciplines, by drawing attention to the works that have been revealed through the form of clothing in textile/fiber art since the 1960s. Within the framework of this purpose, besides the concepts, textile materials and techniques represented by textile, which is an artistic expression tool with its plastic possibilities, in the form of clothes produced with different materials and techniques in fiber art were examined. In order to form the framework of the subject, the developments in the history of art are conveyed in chronological order. In this research, a literature review has been made about the works of artists who consider clothing as a form and concept, and the findings have been interpreted by applying to the work analysis, which is one of the qualitative research methods.
