Prisons are communal living spaces where individuals cannot choose the people and conditions around them, spend all aspects of their lives and are often accompanied by significant health problems. Order, control and discipline are priorities in the prison environment and health care in these settings needs to be improved. In addition to the problems brought about by the period, being a prisoner in some disadvantageous periods of life also includes some physical, health, psychological, social and economic problems caused by being in prisons. The prevalence of these health problems reveals the necessity of providing primary, secondary and tertiary health care services holistically. In this context, all prisons provide health services aimed at meeting the needs of both disadvantaged groups and all prisoners. The holistic care needed by prison inmates can be sustained with a multidisciplinary approach and cooperation with a team specialized in this field. In this team, prison nurses play an important role in improving the health of prisoners, identifying and preventing their physical and mental problems. Prison nursing is a unique specialty. As primary health care providers in prisons, prison and prison nurses can plan and carry out health education and health maintenance and development activities for healthy lifestyle behaviors. Since the prison environment is a special area and the formation, detection and treatment of mental and physical health problems caused by living in this area is specific to this area, it is important to consider and discuss all aspects of prison nursing
