Abstract

The tourism sector is accepted as one of the strategic industries supporting economic growth at the global level. This study aims to examine the theoretical and empirical relationship between tourism and economic growth within the framework of the tourism-led growth hypothesis. The tourism-led growth hypothesis suggests that tourism activities accelerate economic growth by increasing foreign exchange revenues, improving the current account balance, expanding investment volume, and creating employment opportunities. Since tourism has the characteristics of service exports, it is considered an important growth instrument, particularly for developing countries. In this study, the effects of tourism on economic growth are evaluated in terms of income generation, employment creation, investment expansion, technology transfer, and regional development. Tourism activities establish strong linkages with transportation, accommodation, trade, and entertainment sectors, thereby creating multiplier effects within the economy. This multiplier mechanism increases total production capacity and supports the sustainability of economic growth. Additionally, tourism revenues strengthen foreign exchange reserves and contribute to macroeconomic stability. Literature reviews generally indicate a positive relationship between tourism and economic growth. However, the direction and strength of this relationship may vary depending on countries’ economic structures, infrastructure levels, institutional capacity, and tourism diversification. In some countries, tourism stimulates economic growth, whereas in others, economic growth promotes tourism development. This situation reveals the possibility of a bidirectional causality relationship between tourism and economic growth. In conclusion, the tourism sector offers significant opportunities for economic growth. However, for tourism’s contribution to growth to remain sustainable, it must be planned in accordance with environmental and social sustainability principles. Integrating tourism policies with infrastructure investments, human capital development, and sustainable development goals will contribute to maintaining long-term stable economic growth.
