Abstract

Celiac disease is a chronic digestive system disorder caused by gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, short stature, anemia, failure to gain weight, weight loss, osteoporosis, and delayed puberty. In this context, developmental problems are observed in children and adolescents with celiac disease. Since the only known treatment for celiac disease today is a gluten-free diet, individuals with celiac disease must consume gluten-free foods for life. Implementing this diet leads to some problems in the individual's daily social life. Therefore, determining the health literacy levels of adolescents aged 15-18 with celiac disease is important. This research aims to determine the health literacy levels of adolescents aged 15-18 with celiac disease. Health literacy, which is related to protecting, maintaining, and improving people's health and, in this context, enhancing their quality of life, was determined using the Turkish Health Literacy Scale, consisting of a total of 32 items. The Turkish Health Literacy Scale consists of two sub-dimensions: "Treatment and service dimension" and "Disease prevention/health promotion dimension". In line with the research objective, data were collected from 160 adolescents aged 15-18 with celiac disease living in Çorum, Ankara, Samsun, and Gaziantep provinces who voluntarily participated in the study. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS program according to the participants' health literacy levels, gender, age, disease duration, and place of residence. The most important finding of the study was that 70% of the participants had a "Insufficient" or "Problematic-Limited" level of health literacy. Furthermore, it was found that 18-year-old celiac patients had higher health literacy levels than 15-year-olds, and that health literacy levels increased with increasing disease duration. The results were discussed in light of research findings in the literature, and suggestions were presented for solving the health literacy problems experienced by adolescents with celiac disease.
