ABSTRACT
This study aims to examine the attitudes and awareness levels of pre-service teachers towards obesity, evaluating their potential impact on combating obesity and providing health education in their future professional roles. In recent years, obesity rates have been rapidly increasing worldwide, becoming a significant public health issue, especially among children and adolescents. Obesity leads to serious health problems such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer, significantly reducing individuals' quality of life. In this context, teachers play a critical role in combating obesity by promoting healthy eating and physical activity habits among their students. In this study, the “Scale for Assessing Attitudes towards Balanced Nutrition and Obesity,” developed by Kat Öztürk, was administered to 477 students aged 18-20. Among the participants, 21.4% were classified as obese, while 78.6% were found to be normal or overweight. Additionally, it was observed that the obesity rate was higher among students residing in dormitories compared to those living at home, and female students were found to be more conscious about obesity than male students. The scale scores of obese students were higher compared to those of normal and overweight students. The results of the study indicate that pre-service teachers generally exhibit positive attitudes towards obesity, suggesting that this could have a beneficial effect on their students' adoption of healthy lifestyle habits in the future. It is emphasized that teacher education programs should include training to raise awareness about obesity. The dissemination of such educational programs is considered a crucial step in improving public health and reducing obesity rates in the future.
