Abstract

The community of our age is a knowledge society. In addition to reach information quickly, it is also vital that with which method we reach reliable and functional information. It is now possible to reach information on education efficiently with the distance education practices. The coronavirus pandemic is on the agenda of the world as never before ,so the needed distance education practices, and officially they are based on 19th century but according to the alternative sources, they are based on the invention of writing times. In early practices, distance education was a result of a necessity and responsibility to make the people reached education who could not use their education rights for various reasons but then with the effect of changing conditions, necessities and globalisation, not only disadvantageous groups but also the other parts of society wanted to use distance education systems actively. Firsty these practices were based on letters, radio and television and later distance education was not an attached or additional education-instruction system any more thanks to the widespread using of Internet and developments in education technologies. Moreover it developed into an educational activity which even the states made plannings and investmens on it. In this study, development of the idea and practises of distance education in the world with the other states’ activities will be discussed. In addition, distance education practices in Turkey will be focused. Consequently, past stages of distance education systems in our country, current situation and its future will be analyzed for a better understanding.
