Özet

This study investigated the predictive role of subdimensions of psychological fragility and self-sacrifice in relation to anxiety levels among university students within the context of higher education. A correlational research design was employed to collect data from 445 university students using the Psychological Fragility Scale, the Self-Sacrifice Scale, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed that psychological vulnerability is a strong and statistically significant predictor of anxiety among university students. However, none of the seven altruism subdimensions (e.g., participation in voluntary activities, providing financial assistance, helping with studies) had a significant predictive effect on anxiety levels. The results suggest that whilst altruistic behaviors do not serve as a protective factor in managing academic and social anxiety, psychological fragility, characterized by dependence on external validation and fear of failure, is the primary source of anxiety. Based on these findings, preventive interventions aimed at reducing anxiety in university counseling centers should focus on enhancing students’ cognitive flexibility and addressing psychological fragility rather than relying solely on external measures that encourage prosocial behavior.
